Giacomo l'idealista

Artefact Type:

film

Description:

This drama film marked the debut of Lattuada as a director, and was dubbed 'calligraphic' for its attention to style and formalistic quality, which the director defined as an 'elegant' strategy to elude the constraints of propaganda. It tells the tragic story of a couple, Giacomo and Celestina, set in 1885; Giacomo is a philosophy teacher who is hired by an aristocrat and therefore moves into his house with Celestina. Celestina is raped by a member of the aristocratic family and sent away, and she dies while trying to reunite with Giacomo.
