Description:

Elegantly shot film, dubbed 'calligraphic' by critics for its formalistic and highly stylized quality. The film, based on a novel by Fogazzaro, is set during the Italian Risorgimento and revolves around the contrast between family and public duties. Franco, a young man of noble descent, marries a non-aristocratic woman, Luisa, against the will of his grandmother, who then sets out to disrupt their lives.
